Iran Caravanserais

Iranian ancient people tried to make the roads across the country safe for trade and delivering letters or news. This was only fulfilled by building special type of inns for travelers called Caravanserai or Caravansary. Development of caravanserais dates back to Achaemenid era that is more than 2500 years ago. On the roads, Caravanserais were built on a distance that a caravan could travel in a day. Also, caravanserais were built inside of cities too for travelers. The main feature of a caravanserai has an entrance and the inner space is enclosed by walls and ramparts.

Due to long distances between cities and villages and also dryness in most parts of the country the necessity for caravanserais to rest and preparing food arose and without this kind of accommodation there was no possibility to travel throughout the roads and  connect different parts of the country.

Imam Khomeini International Airport

Update (2019, 2020)

Imam Khomeni Airport (IKA) is the international airport of Tehran serving almost all international flights. It functions as the basic source for two Iranian Airlines, Mahan Air and Iran Air.

IKA is located virtually 40kms south of Tehran close to the neighborhood of Robatkarim and Islamshahr. Imam Khomeini Airport is also a destination to other international airlines including Turkish, ATA, Qatar, and Iran Aseman airlines, to name a few. (See the list in the end to get informed about the complete list of airlines and direct flights provided by IKA).

Terminals in the IKA

It contains three passenger terminals (Terminal 1, Salam and Iranshahr, respectively) of which the third is still in its planning phase. It is estimated that after being constructed, the whole terminals would be able to transfer around 30 million passengers a year, while it transfers around 14 million of passengers and thousand tons of cargo, for the time being.

How to Get to IKA?

Metro line one (the red line) is the not only the cheapest way but also the fastest route to Tehran and out of this city; though you should stop off at Shahed station to take the next train to or from the city center. Remember that the metro line, Shahr-e Aftab↔ IKA, is due every 80 minutes, though Tajrish station↔ Shahr-e Aftab is expected every 3 minutes. Besides, there are official taxis (much more expensive than the public transportation) which take you to the airport and the reverse. Moreover, there are buses which travel to and fro Haram-e Motahar, metro station and Azadi Square as well as Mehrabad Airport. For those who travel in luxury CIP is also available.

Facilities in IKA

In the airport there is the possibility of buying Iran SIM card or exchanging some of your cash. Similar to other airports, Imam Khomeini Airport has duty free shops which are not recommended to those who go on an economic trip as they are highly expensive. You will find free water as well.

IKA Hotels

Ibis and Novotel chain hotels have marked the first international branded hotels in Iran after the Islamic Revolution. They are both close to Terminal 1 and connected to each other by a sky bridge.

Ins and Outs of IKA security and Fly Process

Iran’s Imam Khomeini Airport might function a bit different from those of western countries.  Firstly, security is needed for you and your handy stuffs including your bag or backpack. After that you will enter the hall where counters of airlines check-in wait for you. Entering this hall, you might have accompany of your friends and families and they do not ask for your boarding pass. Following your check-in and dropping your bags with your airline, you proceed to fly. This is the point where you need to show your boarding pass. The second hall provides you with duty free shops, cafes and restaurants as soon as you get in there. The last step moves you forward to the gate. There are different areas with different gates which have their specific security line through which you go once more and in the same way. Passing through the gate you arrive in the waiting area where there are toilets and few shops. Security lines are separated for men and women. To exchange your cash, you should get back the stairs after you receive your luggage as the money exchange counter is located on the departure floor.

Native plants of Fars Province in spring:

Each year with coming of spring, several types of plants grow in
different regions of Iran. Among them, Fars Province is one of the most
desirable geographic locations and three kinds of climates that include mountainous,
temperate and warm, rich in rare and beneficial plants. Here are some examples:

1. Succory (Kaasni):

Succory is a plant that is originated in Central Europe, central,
western parts of Asia and North Africa. In Iran, this useful plant has a large
dispersal in Eghlid, Fars Province. This plant is a liver and kidney cleanser,
heat and thirst reliever and it heals blood pressure and bile, also reduces the blood sugar of diabetic patients and its poultice use
for eye pain. Another use of succory, especially in Shiraz, is the distillation
of this plant as a beverage that is called “Araq”. This delicious drink can
also be drunk by adding sweeteners.

2. Acanthus (Kangar):

It is one of the wild plants and is consumed as a vegetable that
helps the digestive system and anorexia and its antioxidant protects the skin
against cancer. In Iran, Kangar is used to prepare a delicious stew that is eaten
with rice. Also the combination of yogurt with Kangar is a dessert, called “Kangarmaast”.

3. Truffle (Donbalan):

Donbalan is a kind of mushrooms that is mostly used in the
preparation of various types of foods and sauces and aromatic oils as well as
pharmaceutical applications. This mushroom is found in many temperate regions
of Fars Province such as Shiraz, Mamasani and Arsanjan, by trained dogs or pigs.

4. Allium Jesdianum (Bonsorkh):

This is a native and wild plant of Iran and is very effective in
treating diseases such as kidney stones and colds. Iranians use it as a
seasoning and flavor to their food.

5. Mountain Celery (Karafs):

It is a wild plant that grows in mountainous climate of Iran, such
as Fars Province. Karafs is a pain reliever. The “Khoreshte Karafs”, which is a
stew, made by Karafs, is a traditional and tasty food of Iranian.

Herbal Drinks

Iran is home to spring during March, April and May. But beside the
freshness and picturesque natural sceneries, one will be delighted by
mouth-watering herbal drinks or araqĩyāt everywhere. As a traveler you might
want to enjoy such herbal drinks.

Although they are called araq (generally used for alcoholic drinks,
well-known in Arabic countries), they are cold pleasant non-alcoholic drinks
naturally rich with medical properties including anti-stress and anti-insomnia
to name a few. There are rose-water, orange-blossom water, chicory water, etc.
usually sweetened and sometimes added by London rocket or chia seeds.

Since spring is the season when Iranians distill herbal plants, it
is the best time to taste this fresh delicious drink in the coffee shops or
take-away cafes in all the cities specifically Shiraz and Kashan as the origin
to herbal drinks.

Carnet de Passage en Iran

Self-driving travelers who travel with their own vehicles including car and motorcycle must have heard the name of carnet de passage by which they are permitted to import their cars to many countries. It is a document issued by AIT/FIA for the vehicles to facilitate the transit of land borders of some countries enter a country. This document contains the information of the vehicle like model, color, registration number and the owner.

Iran is also among those countries where you need to get the carnet de passage as a permission for your motorcycle or car to enter the country. According to Touring and Automobile Club of the Islamic Republic of Iran, tourists, foreign passengers or Iranians who have been residing abroad at least for one year ( the last six months uninterrupted), can import their motor vehicles while traveling to Iran on the condition that they obtain CPD from touring clubs or National Automobile Association of the origin country. Those passengers can use their automobile inside Iran at most for 3 months and if the Iranian customs agrees, this deadline may be extended. It is possible to exit and enter the country via allowed borders several times, as well. People who could not get this license for some reasons, can pay a cash deposit at the entrance border of Iran and receive the Carnet de Passages, but it is not recommended due to being time-consuming.

Though there is no specific situation for the passengers to Iran besides the CPD, passengers who temporarily import their vehicles into the Islamic Republic of Iran must agree to obey traffic laws and regulations of the country and particularly the conditions of temporary importation.

For those who travel with their own vehicles, it should be mentioned that there are enough petrol stations on the routes and you can find their locations by a click. Just make sure to put enough fuel each time you see a station since there may be long distances between them. Furthermore, don’t worry about repair shops, each town has got one at least.
